Finally, after about a year and 2 months, these guys decide to return with another album!

Bonamana (미인아; literal meaning Beauty) is the fourth studio album by Super Junior, released on May 13, 2010 in South Korea. Over 200,000 copies were pre-ordered a week after the release date was announced, setting a new high record for the group. According to South Korea’s Hanteo chart, it debuted at #1 on the charts, selling over 36,000 copies on the first day of release. After eight more days of release, over 100,000 copies were sold.

* Promotional Songs/Singles

Starting of the album is their new single 미인아 (BONAMANA). The genre of this song is described as “SJ FUNKY”, which is true because it IS Super Junior, and the song IS “Funky” to a certain extent (although I don’t think anyone uses that term anymore XD). It’s got nice beats and all, and its heavily auto-tuned to the point that I couldn’t tell who was singing which part until I saw the video but the song does remind one of SORRY SORRY, maybe because it’s written and composed by the same person who did SORRY SORRY, and it also reminds me of SHINee’s Ring Ding Dong so it doesn’t actually seem like a TURNING POINT IN SJ MUSIC! Also, it’s probably not AS catchy as those 2 songs, might get annoying after a while, but nevertheless, it’s still CATCHY, whereas SORRY SORRY was CATCHY AS HELL!

From the “funky” sounds of Miina, we move onto another pretty catchy, dance number 나쁜 여자 BOOM BOOM (is it okay to call it dance? I’m not too sure). Pretty nice placing, that’s for sure, because BOOM BOOM isn’t as fast as Miina, and it generally makes a nice transition song. Not too bad as a song itself, it’s got a nice beat as well, maybe also annoying to listen to sometimes,maybe a bit MEH at times. It’s seriously a depends-on-your-mood type song. The best part probably has to be the “Twinkle Twinkle little star” line, slowing the song a little bit till the chorus, which was annoying and disappointing, I was expecting more of a rough, loud !BOOM BOOM! chorus and not the present one, which (I’m sorry) just ruins the song. Plus I can’t be bothered to listen to the full song in one go, because it’s just not THAT interesting!

Super Junior K.R.Y decides to take over in 응결 (Coagulation) after BOOM BOOM. Hmmm….not a bad song – pretty much dominated by the piano till the near middle, where more strong instruments kick in. Their vocals have always been impressive – they are pretty soft in the beginning and get louder and stronger with the music till a point where the MUSIC actually seems to drown their voices, which must stand for REALLY loud and strong instruments actually capable of dominating KYUHYUN’s voice! HA! Well, it does have it’s weak points but the song is overall very sweet, with a pretty “singable” tune, and a soft ending.

Turning away from Coagulation,we run into 나란 사람 (Your Eyes), a nice semi-mid paced song, with a pretty sweet arrangement, piano, finger snaps, and starting with the most suitable person to sing a song like this – Kyuhyun, moving onto Yesung – well no wonder, it’s a duet between those two which is a pretty good idea because their voices sound good  together in a song and they DO have the strongest vocals in the group. Nice song.

I’m not sure what genre we put My Only Girl into, but it is a catchy song, seems too slow too dance to. It’s got the typical techno feel to it, got a considerable amount of music changes. I can actually tell who’s singing what part – HEECHUL! I can HEAR HIM! YAY! FINALLY! It’s catchy, a kind of song that makes one just want to just shake a little, or just hum along with the chorus which, if you listen to over an over, is  really catchy – “You’re my Only, You’re My Only, You’re my O-O-O-Only Girl!”  However, it’s too short for my liking but a nice change from slow or mid paced songs!

Now we have the semi-mid paced half-cheerful 사랑이 이렇게 My All Is In You. I don’t really have much to say about this. It’s okay I guess. The guys’ voices blend in very well in the chorus, and Yesungs and Kyuhyun’s adlibbing is as impressive as ever. Like I said, it’s just half cheerful, a sort of put-a-good-feeling-in-your-heart type song.

Moving onto the most impressive and catchiest song of the album Shake It UP! DAMN! This song made me want to dance from the very first listen, even though it might not be a complete dance number. Like I said before, their voices blend perfectly, and thus the chorus going “SHAKE IT UP!~” is AMAZING! I love this song from A to Z. It’s got some nice jazz instruments runnning in the back as well and I would’ve actually preferred if they used this song as a promotional song and not BOOM BOOM. There’s just no describing this song, it’s one their best songs EVER!

Now, we have a ballad-type song 잠들고 싶어 (In My Dream). The name sort of gave it away, it’s a nice slow song, with pretty strong vocals from the guys. The chorus has very strong and steady vocals but won’t get stuck in your head. I’m glad this isn’t K.R.Y, but the rest as well (which mostly includes Sungmin and Donghae, but the others were there as well). Over that, the bridge and the last chorus were very impressive as well. A generally nice song.

Again, we have the slow-paced 봄날 – Bomnal (One Fine Spring Day). Ryeowooks solo – not bad, but he really isn’t my favourite, so I wasn’t really interested in the song. That said, the song’s got a nice tune, and his vocals fit in, with the piano and violins. The chorus is a bit One Fine Spring Day-ish(XD), so it is generally nice!

AHA! A song like Angela from their previous album  – 좋은 사람 (Good Person). It’s got a very cheerful the-day’s-gonna-be-fine feeling. A very “LOOK UP! The sky is shining!” type song. The kind of song I’ve heard most Japanese singers sing – the vocals and the music are balanced, so the music hasn’t overpowered their vocals and the bridge quickly transits to the last chorus. Not a bad addition to the album, actually, the album was desperately in need of such a song, after ther ballads! Nice job on this song!

Now! A song that makes me look forward to FIFA! HERE WE GO! This might not be the song they sang for the World Cup, but I wish they had. I don’t why, but it just reminds me of football, and it’s got a very “GET UP! GET UP” feeling – if you know what I mean. Plus I’m happy the bridge was sung with Yesung and Kyuhyun, because their vocals as usual are amazing and compliment each other. Also, I’m REALLY happy Eunhyuk, and Shindong ended the song with their rapping because they haven’t really been heard in the rest of the album! Ah! A nice end to the album! GOOD JOB GUYS!

I know, my ratings are lenient, but I really LOVE SUJU, and can’t give them less than a 5/10. Sorry Sorry!

Overall Rating

Jaa! Mata Ne~
